The ecological importance of this Nature Reserve is due to the fusion of its various ecosystems. One of the park's most fascinating areas are the salt flats. They cover more than 5,500 hectares of land, and their use dates back to the times of the Phoenicians.
Vineyards, oak woods and meadows are part of the Chiclana landscape; there are also lakes - Jeli and Montellano - where many different bird species can be found, some of them in danger of extinction.
Chiclana beaches are renowned for their beauty. One of the most famous beaches is La Barrosa. It is only six kilometres away from the centre of Chiclana, and surrounded by pine tree woods. The beach itself is divided into two sections; one that is built-up, and offers all kind of services, and another that is practically deserted. It is considered to be one of the best beaches on the Andalusian coast, and was recently granted the blue flag by the Clean European Seas Association.
All the hotels and buildings that make up the resort complex of Novo Sancti Petri are low rise, with the maximum being 2 storeys.
