The island of Sancti Petri stands between history and legend, and has always been linked to the figure of Hercules. The Phoenicians built the Hercules Temple on this small island and according to myth, two of the twelve works performed by Hercules took place in this land. In the 12th century the lighthouse and the castle of Sancti Petri was built over its ruins. However, the Phoenicians were not the only civilization to have passed through this area, as there are remains from other settlers such as the Carthaginians and the Romans.
