the Straits of Gibraltar, the Roman Fretus Herculeum and the Arab Boughaz el Tarek

Most of Roche's history centres around the town's lighthouse, which is related to the Straits of Gibraltar, the Roman Fretus Herculeum and the Arab Boughaz el Tarek. As it was impossible for the Phoenicians and the Romans to navigate too far from the coastline, the town's lighthouse became a vital geographical reference for the trade of both cultures. At the same time, Roche had an important fishing industry, and produced a fish sauce called Garum which was very popular in Rome. The Garum was a sauce made of the viscera of tuna, sardines and other fish left to ferment in salt.

Legend has it that the ruins of the Temple of the God Juno, built by the Romans and submerged under the sea, had been found. However, nobody has yet come up with credible evidence and the story has become part of Roche's myth.
