Zahara de los Atunes is a small fishing village with about 1,500 inhabitants. The village itself oozes peacefulness, and has been compared many times to what the Costa del Sol was like 30 years ago. It is one of the few places in southern Spain where one can still get a coffee and toast, soaked in virgin extra olive oil, for just one euro fifty! The ruins of the Castillo de Almadrabas, built in the 16th century to protect the town from pirates, are in the town itself. The castle was later used by local fishermen to store their tuna fishing equipment.

Although Zahara can be a bit quiet during the winter, it suddenly wakes up at the beginning of each summer. Little by little it is becoming known as one of the trendiest places on the coast, with dozens of cool bars and restaurants.
